Saturday June 7, Projects


9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Akron-Canton Foodbank – Packing and sorting food. Family Friendly but limited to age 8 and above. Volunteers Needed: 25.

9:30 – 11:30amSupport for Newcomer Neighbors – Informational Only.  Q&A and listening session on how the current governmental landscape has changed and how it effects our newcomer and international neighbors as well as how to support these communities. Light refreshments provided. Family Friendly, 13 & up. Volunteers Needed: Unlimited depending on registrations. *** Project leader will provide location and parking the week of the event.


1 – 2:30 p.m. Brown Bag BlessingsBrown Bag Blessings will provide a brown bag lunch or dinner for those at the Haven of Rest. We will meet at New Hope Baptist Church located at 1706 S. Hawkins Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44320 to pack the bags. We will deliver them to the Haven of Rest around 2 – 2:30 pm. Please note, we will not serve, we will only drop off. Bring empty boxes to carry the bags. Family Friendly – all agesVolunteers Needed: 15.


— FILLED — 10 – 11:30 a.m. Charades & Snacks at Village of St. Edward – Simple charades with the residents of the Village of St. Edward. Open to religious school students. Family Friendly – all ages. — FILLED —


10 am – 2 pm Spring Cleaning” at DLM – The Dare to Love More Food and Resource Center Spring Cleaning and more! Help us spruce up our facilities by cleaning and disinfecting the kitchen, social hall, folding chairs and tables. Help with sorting clothing, disinfecting shoes and organizing clothing rooms. Weather permitting, a group will go outside to pull weeds and pick up trash in the playground area as well as doing general maintenance, painting and minor repairs of the equipment. DLM will provide work gloves, garbage bags and cleaning supplies. Lunch will be provided!” Family Friendly – all ages. Volunteers Needed: 20


9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Habitat Cleanup – Volunteers will help pulling weeds and picking up trash outside of our Habitat facility. If it’s raining, we will be inside doing various things like helping unload trucks and helping in the Restore. 18 and older Volunteers Needed: 5.


9 a.m. – noon – Harmony HouseHarmony House is an emergency supportive housing program for young people ages 18-24 working with youth as they navigate the challenging transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Our current project is a beautification of the administration building. We will clean garden beds, plant shrubs, and paint the main doors. Bring work gloves and sunscreen. Family Friendly. 15 and up. Volunteers Needed: 10


8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Knights of Columbus/ Angels in Blue Jeans Deck and Fence repair and painting at three different sites (Tallmadge, Cuyahoga Falls, Akron). Clients include veteran, cancer patient and others in need. Water provided. Bring sunscreen, hat, work gloves, and safety glasses. Family Friendly – 13 and up with parent. Volunteers Needed: 25.


11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Safe Landing for Boys – Safe Landing Youth Shelter for Boys provides short-term residential care to youth ages 11-17. Volunteers will engage with the boys in  an afternoon of sports, games, and/or crafts after hosting a picnic. Volunteers will coordinate the week prior about what to bring for the picnic and the recreational activities. 18 and older Volunteers Needed: 8.


10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Silver Maple Ridge Project – Serving and Supporting We will be cleaning the lot, picking up trash while providing support and encouragement to site supervisors and their building volunteers. Grilled hot dogs, chips and drinks will be provided. Family Friendly 18 and up. Volunteers Needed: 5.


Sunday June 8 Projects


3:30 – 5 p.m. Always Climbing Panel Discussion – How to Cope with Violence – High school students from Always Climbing Project will lead a powerful and timely discussion focused on violence, youth violence and policing. The 90-minute session will begin with a 45-minute student-led panel, guided by Bryce Harris, the executive director of Always Climbing. Teens will share personal insights, experiences, and perspectives. The second half will transition into roundtable discussions, panelists and audience members will participate in small groups to dive deeper into the conversation, answer questions and explore actionable ideas for change in their communities. Sponsored by the Akron Area Interfaith Council. Family Friendly. Volunteers Needed: 100+

We invite all those who participated in Mitzvah projects on Saturday and Sunday to join this discussion. Come any time between 3:30 and 5:00 and then stay for dinner.


12 – 3 p.m. – Battered Women’s Shelter – Help us clean and organize to keep the shelter a beautiful and welcoming space. Family Friendly – 15 and up. Volunteers Needed: 10.

9 a.m. – 11 a.m. AND 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Cookies for the Community – Two shifts to make dough and bake a variety of cookies for Ronald McDonald House and other community organizations at the Temple kitchen. Family Friendly. Volunteers Needed: 20.

 

1 – 3 p.m. Dresses – Dresses with Love – Bring your sewing machine and sewing tools to St Paul’s Episcopal Church of Akron to make pretty sundresses for young girls in need around the globe. A dress kit with all the pieces for each dress will be provided.
All levels of experience are needed. 18 and older. Volunteers Needed: 15

2:30 – 4 p.m. – Encouragement Cards  – All ages are welcome to create encouragement cards for youth in the Summit County Juvenile Detention Facility, many of whom receive no visitors or mail. Family Friendly – All ages. Volunteers Needed: 10.

12 – 3 p.m. – Project Linus – The Project Linus Blanket project makes knotted blankets for children who stay at Akron Children’s Hospital. Simple process – cut and knot fringes on pieces of fleece. PLEASE BRING SCISSORS!!! Family Friendly. Volunteers Needed: 20. Family Friendly 12 & up. Volunteers Needed: 20.

1 – 3 p.m. – Red Oak Behavioral Health – Packing Supplies for Youth Mental Health. Red Oak Behavioral Health delivers mental health and wellness services that empower students and those who support them. Help pack supply totes for our staff to use with clients this summer. Work can be done sitting or standing. Family Friendly 12 & up. Volunteers Needed: 8.

Set up 3:30– 6:30 p.m. After Project Dinner from 5 – 6 p.m.– After our days of service, a Swenson’s Burger dinner with side salads and beverages will be available for all volunteers in the Temple Israel Social Hall. Donations needed of only “pick-up” types of desserts – cookies, brownies, etc.– will be accepted. Volunteers Needed: 5. You may need to stay a bit longer for cleanup.
